Members of the public are invited to volunteer on the Arts Commission’s standing committees: Public Art; Website; Grants; Venues; Events. Please contact us if you are interested.
Be a Commissioner
Fredericksburg residents interested in serving on any of the city’s boards and commissions are welcome to complete the online application to apply. Vacancies are usually advertised two months before a vacancy becomes available unless the vacancy is unexpected (resignation, resident status change, etc.). Submit applications to the City Clerk’s Office via the website
Attend a Meeting
The Arts Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the 2nd floor conference room at City Hall, 715 Princess Anne St. Meetings are open to the public, and there are opportunities for open comments at the beginning of each meeting.

Government Grant Challenge
The Fredericksburg Arts Commission administers an annual grant to City non-profit arts organizations called the Local Government Challenge Grant.
- Funded with City tax dollars and matching funds from the Virginia Commission for the Arts
- Operational grant for awardees; applications are not for specific projects or events
- Applications Process through the City of Fredericksburg
FAC Funding
The Fredericksburg Arts Commission (FAC) seeks to support both new and established arts events and projects in the City of Fredericksburg that celebrate and expand the arts in our community.
- Apply and compete to receive financial, networking, and marketing support
- FAC defines “arts” broadly and artists – visual, functional, performing, literary, digital, culinary
- FAC is determined via a competitive application process
Important Dates
Government Grant:
- Any interested 501(c)(3) City arts organization should fill out the application and return it to Julie Perry
- Email Mrs. Perry or go to the Fredericksburg Visitor Center at 706 Caroline Street
- All completed applications are due by COB March 3rd, 2017
- Applications received by March 1st, June 1st, September 1st, and December 1st
- Reviews applications in April, July, October, and January
- All applicants will be notified of the FAC’s decision
Current Projects
Sculpture Project
The Fredericksburg (VA) Arts Commission has selected six locations for display of self-supporting, outdoor public sculpture in 2017-18. Each installation will be in place for eleven months. The invitation is open to artists working independently or in a collaborative group. Scroll through the images below to see current and past sculpture projects.
Entry Requirements
The invitation is open to artists working independently or in a collaborative group. There is no entry fee.
- A professional resumé and portfolio of three-dimensional works
- An artist statement
- Digital photos (.jpg format, minimum 72 dpi and 1920 x 1920 dimensions)
- A brief statement concerning each work, including medium and dimensions
- All contact information, including telephone numbers, email, mailing address and website
Selection Process
Six finalists and one alternate will be picked from submitted materials
- Contract arrangements are made with artist for receiving and installing each sculpture
- Delivery and pickup of artwork is the artist's responsibility
- FAC will provide general liability insurance for the project
- Artist may carry his/her own insurance
